A few Moments of Rene Higuita

Without doubt the most eccentric goalkeeper of all, Higuita is most famous for his performance during the second round of Italia ’90 against Cameroon. With the score deadlocked at 0-0 into extra time, Higuita attempted to dribble past veteran striker Roger Milla midway inside his own half only to be tackled. Milla dispatched into an open net and Colombia would be eliminated 2-1.

Higuita was notorious for taking risks. He would regularly leave his own area to venture towards the centre circle, taking on forwards, and attempting flicks, tricks and backheels. In 1995, Higuita created the ‘Scorpion Kick’ at Wembley in a friendly against England, a somersault heeled goalie clearance from a mishit Jamie Redknapp cross. Off the pitch he also created headlines, being implicated in a kidnap case involving drug baron Pablo Escobar in 1993, and testing positive for cocaine in 2004.

World Cup 1990 Final - Germany - Argentina

The 1990 World Cup Final was contested between West Germany and Argentina. It was an ill-tempered game, notable for the first two sendings off in a World Cup final. West Germany won 10, with a late Andreas Brehme penalty sealing their third World Cup win. Argentina also became the first team not to score in a World Cup Final.

Roger Milla - World Cup 1990

Roger Milla (born Albert Roger Mooh Miller, supposedly on 20 May 1952) is a retired cameroonian  footballer who played as a striker. He was one of the first African  players to be a major star on the international stage. He played in three World cups  for the Cmerron national team.

38-year old Milla emerged as one of the tournament's major stars. He scored four goals in Italy, celebrating each one with a dance around the corner post that has become a popular goal celebration ever since. Two of his goals came against  Romania in Cameroon's second game, and two more came in extra time against Colombia  in the last 16 to carry Cameroon to the quarter-finals, the furthest an African team had ever advanced at the World Cup.
